This was one of my dad’s books. A text book, apparently. Printed the year I was born. When I went to college I took it with me It’s not as pretty as the volumes on my living room showcase shelf, but no single volume on my shelf deserves more credit for fueling my love for deep, challenging, artistic word-smithing. Most memorable poems from the collection: Housman and “The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock” by that “British” poet who was born in St. Louis and had a fondness for practical cats.
Jan 19, Robert Locklear rated it really liked it. This is a great book, a wonderful guide and resource for writers to get a refreshing taste of good writing of other authors.
I’m not in total agreement with all of what Perrine tries to teach, since a lot of it is based more on his opinion than what is actually what I have found to be true, but it gives you another person’s perspective on good writing which can influence lirerature own. The various short stories, plays, and poetry that Perrine uses in the book are wonderfully written, and as I mentioned before, a great way to refresh yourself and learn how to become a better writer, for as we all know, the more you read I’d recommend this book.
As for how much I liked the creative work within, it’s a mixed bag.
Some things I really enjoyed and felt led me to grow in my understanding of literature, while others fell flat. I was wavering on giving this 3 stars, but considering the excellent lessons and thought-provoking questions, I thought it only fair to add a star.

May 11, Mrs. I, of course, did not read this in its entirety but am using this to teach AP Lit next year. Awesome book for any English teachers out there in need of any literary analysis guides. The poetry sections are incredibly thorough and offer great examples. Even as a student, if you can find a used copy, I have a feeling you will use the content of this book to improve writing and critical analysis. Jan 11, Zander rated it did not like it. Normally I don’t dignify school textbooks with reviews, but I think it’s necessary to explain why I hate this book so much. Aside from containing multiple factual errors, this book is written in a tone that is pretentious and self-important to the point of giving the reader nausea.
By far the worst part of an AP English class that I otherwise loved. Read this for my AP Lit and Comp class. I originally snagged this from my father who was ready to cart it off to the used bookstore – he’d used it when teaching high school decades ago. I had this idea that I’d make some book art out of it, because I was certain there’d be nothing in it that would appeal to me. But of course I decided to read it before getting out the scissors, and that’s when I discovered the short story Two Bottles of Relish by Lord Dunsany.
I’m not a huge fan of Dunsany, but nothing else I’ve read of his reads quit I originally snagged this from my father who was ready to cart it off to the used bookstore – he’d used it when teaching high school decades ago. I’m not a huge fan of Dunsany, but nothing else I’ve read of his reads quite like this one. And it’s apparently a bit hard to track down not the play, that seems to be all over the place.
So now I must hang on to the book. Somehow I’m not terribly upset. I saved up my tips all week to pay for it and got another bartender to switch nights with me, and I was absolutely amazed that I could actually write a little bit. The next semester I ate UP the Comp II class, and at the end of the semester I went to turn my book back in at the bookstore, and this Lit book was on the used book clearance shelf for like a dollar.
I read through it all that summer, and it’s still weighted down with paper clips where I marked poems I liked. I have the 3rd edition from and have read every page, poem, and short story at least three times. Jan 26, Jenifer rated it it was amazing. I have read through most of the book, including all of the stories at one time or another and many of the stories and poems multiple times.
Literature; structure, sound, and sense by Laurence Perrine This is one of the best literature compilations I’ve ever come across. I’ve been lugging it around for years since my first college days and still find myself refering to it. Jun 24, Storm rated it it was amazing. Use it all the time. Dec 17, Serina rated it liked it Shelves: The didactic explanations and dull questions at the end of the poems kind of took away the joy of reading poetry, but at least the selection is very nice.
I found it very useful. Helped me learn many things about literature. View all 3 comments.

So yeah, I read this in my English class in 12th grade, but it is still the best collection of short stories and poetry that I’ve found. Not that I actually sat down and read this book cover to cover, but I have to give it 5 stars.
It is so witty and entertaining; it makes poetry fun! There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
